from ryan davidson's blog

"'Banner blindness' is a new mental trend that is seriously freaking out advertisers: a significant percentage of people who read a web page cannot, within seconds of reading the page, tell you what ads were on the site. This strikes me as a useful skill, the ability to sort out advertising from content on the fly, without thinking about it."

I have this. I would imagine most frequent Internet users do. I agree with him, though - it's a useful trait, not a disability.

As for what he addresses earlier in the post, I can't be so sanguine. There are some times in your life when you have to focus on one thing at a time. (Working in the box factory comes to mind for me.) Being able to do so is beneficial.

(Nice day today. Could wish to be back home. In fact, I do. Sunday afternoon drives around Lancaster County - they're hard to beat.

The post above was in substitute for the typical emotional blather which most people put on their blogs, and which I, and most of my friends, seek to avoid.)

That's why some of us aren't working in box factories.

"One thing" isn't quite as clear cut as it sounds. If that thing involves enough different sources of information, I'm happy as a clam.

Try working at a restaurant, where you're thinking about refills, singing happy birthday, bringing drinks from the bar, sidework, salads, greeting tables, ringing in entrees and keeping your nose clean all at the same time. It is driving me to distraction.

I wonder if women are generally better at that sort of thing it than men... I mean, that's what THEY tell us, but it doesn't really play out in the restaurant biz. On the other hand, let me contradict myself and say that the only long-term, professional servers I know who ALWAYS do a good job are three in number. One of them is a gay man and the other two are women.

(One of them is names Ann and she works lunches at the Macaroni Grill in Chattanooga -- go leave her a big tip.)
