i ran across this while writing my spider eaters essay...
The Museum of Communism FAQ, with a list of Mao's crimes against humanity. This provides a good "big picture" counterpoint to the story of Rae Yang, who it seems didn't witness most of the worst of what went on during the years she lived in China.

You bring up some interesting points. Of particular interest is the question of Mao's role in the Chinese revolution. He is called both the Lenin and and Stalin of China. This is a thought provoking statement for if Mao, while the beloved liberator of a people from the a corrupt government, sank to horrific atrocities against his supporters what would Lenin have done if he had had more time.
