Sun Ra Arkestra

(minus its deceased leader, sadly)

at the Philadelphia Ethical Society, New Year's Eve. I'm excited.

Well, here's the description from Philadelphia Weekly. The $45 price tag is a little steep but the fact that it's supposed to go for 5 hours piques my interest.

Sun Ra Arkestra The Sun Ra Arkestra presents a night of eclectic, outrageous, mystifying and powerful jazz under the direction of Marshall Allen. 8pm-1am. $45. Philadelphia Ethical Society, 1906 S. Rittenhouse Sq. 215.735.3456

I'm excited for you!

I have a friend who saw Sun Ra and the Arkestra play about ten years ago. The show was in Baltimore and it lasted a couple of hours. The crowd loved it, everyone was feeling it. So when it was over and Sun Ra had left, the crowd stuck around for a while and talked. About thirty minutes later, almost the entire crowd had wandered away from the venue. But there were a few who had not wandered. Sun Ra reemerged. He came back out by himself, stood behind the keyboard. And then slowly, but with mad resolve, he began hitting single notes. Then combinations. Then chords. And before anybody could fully prepare, he'd launched into a whole new stellar set. I think it lasted about an hour. And then he left for good, dying a month later.

so be ready, anything could happen.
