so maybe paul wasn't such a misogynist after all
Peter Leithart on the cultural context into which Paul's "women keep silence" came. This is essentially an elaboration of an argument I've heard before, and made myself at times. If women came into the Corinthian church from a context of priestly inarticulateness, they needed to pass through a stage of silence before they could learn how the Word frees us to speak.
UPDATE: A good conversation with my friend John inspired me to find a more extended discussion of the 1 Cor. 14 passage, which may help avoid the charge of pat-ness which Leithart's (and my) argument could fall victim to, if not supported by some serious exegetical work.
